Westminster Marching Band “Storms” into New York:

Takes Third Place

The date was Saturday, October 27th. The time was 8:00pm. The place was Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. The storms and torrential downpours that had led the Bands of America (BOA) officials to cancel the preliminary phase of the competition had dissipated. The Westminster High Marching Band confidently stepped on to the field.

As this would be their last competitive performance of the season, band members wanted to give it their best. Part I: Orion. Part II: Diana. Part III: Scorpio. When the final note cut off and horns were brought down, band members turned to the drum cadence and as they marched off the field they felt they had done their best.  Later, as the band stood at attention on the field for the awards ceremony, they intently listened for their school’s name. The announcer read off the placements: 14th, 13th, 12th, etc. When he got to 9th place there was an audible gasp as the announcer read “West……Orange High School”…then, a very small exhale of relief. Finally, the announcer read “In 3rd place, with a score of 83.10, that’s 8-3 point 1-0………Westminster High School!” Once again, Westminster High was the only band from Maryland at the competition and they brought it all to the field: poise, musicianship, precision and pride. Well done, Owls!

Congratulations to the Owl Marching Band on achieving 3rd place overall and also being named 3rd place - Class AAA Champions at Saturday’s Bands of America Regional Championship in Hempstead, New York. We can’t wait to see what you come up with next fall.

Westminster Owls Finish Sixth in Bands of America Regional

On Saturday, October 20th, the Westminster High School “Owl” Marching Band faced its greatest challenge of the season. They competed against 24 top-tier high school marching bands from seven states in the Bands of America (BOA) Regional Championship at Towson University. At the end of the preliminary competition, the top ten scoring bands were announced. Westminster was the only band from Maryland to make it through to the evening finals.

For their finals performance, the Owl Marching Band came on strong. They played with enthusiasm and heart. They out-played, out-marched and out-scored bands two and three times their size and ended up with a score of 78.30 and a highly respectable 6th place overall finish.

Next week, the band takes a road trip to New York. There, they will compete at the Bands of America Regional Championship, on Saturday, October 27th at Hofstra University (Hempstead, NY). Westminster is due to step-off for preliminary competition at 3:30 pm. At New York, the Owls will square off against fifteen powerhouse east-coast bands, among them BOA rivals: North Penn High School (PA), Bridgewater-Raritan High School (NJ), and King Philip Regional High School (MA).

Congratulations to the Owl Marching Band on Saturday’s thrilling performance and best of luck in New York next weekend.

OWL MARCHING BAND TAKES ON NEW JERSEY: PLACES FIRST

It was 5:50 am as the band gathered for a pre-dawn rehearsal. The morning fog, thick in places, parted briefly and up in the still night sky appeared the constellation of Orion the Hunter, joined by the spectacle of a bright crescent moon. Students who observed this omen took it to heart, as those night-sky apparitions were exactly what their 2007 Competition Show “Beyond the Stars” was all about. Hard work, dedication, discipline, musicianship and school pride: each of those elements combined to enable the Westminster High Owl Marching Band to return home with another 1st place trophy.

The Owl band traveled north to Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Saturday, October 6th. There, they competed in the USSBA Yamaha Cup. They were the only group from Maryland there and they walked away with the highest score (85.40) amongst all 27 bands participating in the afternoon competition. The Owl band took 1st place in their division and also won best music, best visual, best effect, best guard and best percussion caption awards. The band is under the direction of Mr. Mark Lortz and Mr. Brian Drake. October is a busy month for the Owl band as they have the following competitions scheduled: USSBA Show at WHS Stadium (10/13), Bands of America Regional at Towson (10/20), and Bands of America Regional in New York (10/27). Congratulations to the Owl Marching Band for an outstanding performance!
